Why Birmingham?
Will & Katye Lowery
Missionary
A land of old churches and castles, beautiful architecture, gloomy weather. Why send missionaries to England? And what's so special about Birmingham?
We had many of the same questions. It quickly became apparent to us, as we learned about Birmingham, that the church is in a dire state. As you walk through the city, it's far more likely that you'll meet a committed Muslim, than a committed follower of Christ. Less than 4% of the population regularly attends any church! As the rest of Europe has a decreasing birthrate and aging population, Birmingham stands as the youngest city, with 40% of it's population under the age of 25. University students, school-aged children, and young families are just a few of the groups who face the reality of living without ever having a friendship with someone who knows and loves the Lord.
Ministry in Birmingham is best done through relationships. There is a pervasive skepticism towards Christianity and any hope of reaching the lost must take into account the massive barriers that exist for an atheist or Muslim to come to faith. There is a need for faithfulness and perseverance to show the love of Christ to Britons, trusting that God is working in their hearts.
God is working in and through the faithful believers in Birmingham (Roughly 2% of the population)-would you join them in praying for their city? Would you partner with us as we go?
