Story

Debora House of Refuge is a ministry of love to women and their children whose homes have become places of violence and risk, providing safe shelter where new ways of living can be learned and promoting through workshops and resources a culture of peace in the family; encouraging, protecting and restoring physical, mental and spiritual health through churches and communities of Baja California. Vocational preparation is included during their stay, such as sewing classes, graphic design and carpentry. The name and logo come from Judges 4:4-5.
This ministry developed as a project of Baptist women of Baja California in 1998 to address the overwhelming need for resources to aid women and children in the area experiencing domestic violence. After time in preparation and with ongoing conferences on improving peaceful resolution of conflicts, civil association status was granted in 2004, allowing the first families to be received in shelter care. More than 150 families have received shelter care for six months or more since then and many more have been helped to a better way of living. Help is offered to any in need. All hear that God is our constant refuge, a very present help in trouble. Families from all religious backgrounds, every state in Mexico and many other countries have sought and received life-transforming assistance.
Financial and practical help from American and Canadian churches and individuals have been a vital and encouraging partnership in this ministry.

Our greatest privilege is joining Jesus in what he is building: his church. When we reach across the street and around the world with the gospel—locally and globally—we impact lives for eternity.
