The journey within begins with a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. As Christ takes up residence in a person’s life, He begins the wonderful process of personal and spiritual transformation. It all begins in one’s heart.
God chooses to use many vehicles to shape a leader’s heart. These include things like our personal history, our culture, our call, our community, various circumstances, and more.
God’s ultimate purpose is transformation within. As Converge engages with leaders and those in our churches, our purpose is the same; and that is to help people get in touch with this heart shaping work of God’s Spirit. Whether it is helping people with their first spiritual steps, or training and resourcing for spiritual formation, or engaging in certain spiritual disciplines, the journey within is foundational to all that we do. Consider joining with us on this God designed journey within!

What is spiritual formation?
Spiritual formation is the divine and human interplay between God and a leader which serve to write the story of God’s grace in and through a leader’s life over time. It is the shaping of the inner life. Spiritual formation is the heart shaping work of God which script the leader’s life message. God’s forming of a leader’s heart determines how the story of one’s life and ministry is played out in the larger arena of public ministry.
How do I engage in spiritual formation?
Next steps in spiritual formation may be as simple as planning a one day spiritual retreat, or in reading and applying a book on spiritual formation. It could involve getting involved in a one on one life coaching relationship or in a network with other movement leaders. It may begin by putting into practice one or more spiritual disciplines. Whatever, your next step may be, Converge is available to serve you in any of these arenas.
Converge Great Lakes is prepared to assist leaders in their spiritual formation journey. Here are some links and suggestions to get you started:
Spiritual disciplines are ways we place ourselves in the path of God's transforming grace, are the means to the end but are not the end and of themselves and require us to choose obedience over my feelings or circumstances.
There are disciplines that lead us to abstain from things and disciplines that lead us to engage in things and all serve as doorways to transforming grace.
Disciplines that lead us to abstain: fasting and solitude. Disciplines that lead us to engage: serving, scripture memory, and evangelism.
From the time of the early apostles, through the dark ages, and reformation, and into modern and post modern era, followers of Jesus have affirmed essential spiritual disciples as the pathway to experiencing intimacy with God and to experiencing His life changing grace. These disciplines have actually been foundational to the Converge movement from its inception. They include prayer, fasting, confession, solitude, and much more. The livings out of these disciplines are necessary and important for our Converge movement of transformation.
From prayer walks in communities needing a new church, to pastors praying for one another, to encouraging days of fasting, to planning solitude type retreats, Converge seeks to stimulate and facilitate the practice of the spiritual disciplines among its leaders and members. Some of the resources below are a beginning point in this area.
