Lord, Give me Courage

“Lord, give me courage.” I offer this much-needed prayer much less than I should.

Numerous times in Scripture, courage saved the day. This was certainly true as Joshua took the baton of leadership from the masterful Moses. As he stood on the bank of the Jordan River, anticipating his first move, he knew it would be an act of total faith. It wasn’t the water of the river that meant so much, but the powerful people—even giants —of Canaan that most intimidated the Hebrews. After all, they had just spent 40 years wandering the wilderness because they responded in fear rather than faith to God’s command. Here they were again. Bold leadership was essential.

In this pivotal moment of history, God spoke:

“Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous” (Joshua 1:6-7).

God does that, you know. He speaks when we most need to hear his voice. Maybe you’re in one of those spots today. Listen closely. He rarely speaks in the thunder, the storm or the fire, but in the still small whisper of quietness. But usually the whisper’s affect is like an ear-shattering shout. When God speaks and we hear it, we know he has spoken. Strength is given to be courageous.

We Christians often lack courage. We are driven by fear more than we’d like to admit. God wants to take our weakness and turn it into strength. He says to us today, “Be strong and courageous!” He never tells us to be something that we cannot be. We need to act with convicting courage.

Joshua needed to “take the land.” We need to “tell the world.” We cannot do this in our fleshly, wimpy ways, but only by Spirit-empowered courage. Depend on him, pray for courage, pray for people by name that need Christ’s salvation and then put feet to your prayers as you gracefully and boldly be Jesus to others.

Lord, give our Converge staff courage in all places, in all situations, all for your glory.
