D.L. Moody once said, “Water runs downhill, and the highest hills in America are the great cities. If we can stir them, we will stir the whole country.” That vision fueled Moody’s world-changing ministry, based in Chicago, almost 150 years ago. Seven years ago, when Maria and I moved to Chicago to join a church planting team, we quickly learned that the same opportunity that lay before Moody laid before us as well. In those seven years of ministry, with two kids in tow, we’ve seen a city, considered a top 10 “global city,” wracked by heartbreaking challenges — racial, financial, relational and, perhaps most starkly, spiritual — but STILL ripe with opportunity.
Two years ago, God began clarifying a calling on our lives to seize that opportunity by planting a healthy new church in this city that we love so much. In a city of 2.7 million people, where new churches are closing their doors every month, and where a growing group of millennials and Gen Zers are joining the ranks of the “nones” who do not subscribe to any religious affiliation or belief, the need for new churches in Chicago is as great as it’s ever been.
That is why we are planting Canopy Church — a community centered on practicing the way of Jesus for the renewal of Chicago. Our dream is for Canopy to be a place of refuge for the spiritually lost of our city, a place where the presence of God is experienced and where apprentices of Jesus are raised up and sent out on mission — to Chicago and the ends of the earth!
Thank you for partnering with us in this work of seeing God’s kingdom come to Chicago as it is in heaven.
