This month’s church planter spotlight is on Todd Bumgarner. Todd is the pastor of 2 Pillars Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Knowing about God without knowing God
Todd grew up in a small town in Nebraska. In his home, Christianity was known but not reinforced. Todd’s spent his developing years living for himself and not giving much thought about God. It was not that he didn’t believe in Him; it was that he had never seen a need for God. What connection he did have would come through his girlfriend, Meghan, and her family. His relationship with her would carry into adulthood when he would eventually marry her at the end of college.
Todd’s life would continue as he went off to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he majored in engineering. Fraternity life and his studies filled most of his hours at college.
It wasn’t until the end of college that Todd started to ask himself where he could find real joy. It was Meghan who suggested they start going to church.
During this journey, Todd and Meghan would move to St. Louis for Todd’s new job at Boeing as an engineer. While in St. Louis, they connected with a church, made new friends, and began to be discipled in a gospel centered church. Todd listened to sermons via podcast on his daily commute when he would hear the beautiful words of Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Todd had known he was a sinner and needed Jesus, but this verse sealed the deal for his salvation and how he would move forward.
The Gospel is for them
Todd was learning all he could about following Jesus when he heard about a group of people who met quarterly in St. Louis to talk about church planting. He was drawn to the group and started to attend regularly. Here, he met people from both Converge and Acts 29 who made themselves available to answer questions and encourage Todd in his journey.
He couldn’t get out of his mind and heart his fraternity buddies from college who weren’t living for Jesus. He felt a burden because many of them didn’t know the Gospel. He kept thinking, “Christianity is for them!”
Todd started to commute from the St. Louis area to Lincoln on the weekends. He met with people to tell them about Jesus and to cast a vision to start a church. This group would meet regularly and began to grow until it was time for Todd to quit his job and Boeing and move back to Lincoln to start 2 Pillars Church.
Since starting ten years ago, 2 Pillars has seen people come to Jesus while meeting in four locations, the most recent building owned by the Presbyterian Church of America. The PCA has been very gracious in rent and will be selling the building outright. It is the hope that by the end of 2021, 2 Pillars will have a place to call their own.
Praying for 2 Pillars
Todd would ask Converge Heartland to be in prayer for 2 Pillars. Specifically, we can be praying for this new building and the funds necessary for the purchase and fit-up costs; also that we would pray for the people of 2 Pillars. Some are moving away due to jobs, and others are hesitant to meet in person due to COVID. Please pray the church would re-engage in this new normal.
