FAMINE THREATENS 20 MILLION IN EAST AFRICA AND YEMEN

For centuries, the church has been on the frontline of compassion efforts around the world. These efforts come from our understanding of the compassionate character of God, and his desire for us to let our light shine:

“Defend the cause of the weak and the fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (Psalm 82:3-4).

Our missionaries were quick to respond when terrible famine struck Ethiopia in the mid-1980s. Our churches and countless individuals stepped up and gave needed funds. The result: our medical missionaries helped distribute food, assessed child health and conducted a massive immunization campaign. They trained Ethiopian farmers in agricultural development and water sanitation.

Church member Aubrey Huskey made nine airlifts to Ethiopia in 1985 to deliver more than $400,000 in grain, cooking oil and nutritional biscuits to 2600 families. He had already made seven airlifts in the previous 18 months. Baptist World Aid and the National Association of Evangelicals World Relief contributed additional funding to this massive effort. And rural Ethiopian churches grew rapidly.

East Africa now faces a crisis outpacing the ’80s Ethiopian famine: 20 million people in Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan and Kenya are at risk. And 1.4 million children are at “imminent risk of death.”

Working with local churches, World Relief is providing five months of emergency feeding for 45,000 individuals and screening and treating extremely malnourished children. Through World Relief and its partners on the ground in Kenya, South Sudan and other countries, we have the opportunity/privilege to step up again, helping people in many of the hardest-hit regions and sharing the gospel. Please join us in “rescuing the weak and needy.”

World Relief is hosting two African Food Crisis briefings for more information on the relief efforts.
