Richard and Jocelyn Jelsma (BGC Canada Missionary)

Richard, Jocelyn and their four children have called Rwanda "home" for the past five years, as they've partnered with a Rwandan church in community health ministry. Richard, manages construction of a birth centre that offers primary health care to the families of Nyabisindu, as well as those in the Gasabo district. He also has been involved in sustainable agriculture projects (pineapple project supporting women living with and affected by HIV/ AIDS) and over this next term is initiating a farming and discipleship project using "Farming God's way" as a tool.

Jocelyn, a registered midwife, and her team of health workers, provide community based prenatal and postpartum care to families at risk in Nyabisindu slum. This ministry is offered out of the Nyabisindu church plant, born out of community health evangelism currently meeting in a tent! Twice a week, the team of Rwandan nurses, midwives, a doctor, a social worker, and community health workers, join together to offer holistic care (emotional, physical and spiritual care) and health care education along with worship, prayer, and personal maternity services. We use community health evangelism as a tool to reach families with hope and the gospel. Together, lives are being transformed, as God works among these families to draw them to Him.

Autumn 2014, we hope to open the birth centre, offering women a place to deliver safely, reducing the maternal and infant mortality rates in Rwanda. We train midwives and nurses, integrating students into our community program for clinical practice, and raising the standard of quality, compassionate care in Rwanda. Our centre will continue to be a place of meeting spiritual and physical needs, just as Jesus did, along with training this next generation of health care providers! Thank you for partnering with us!
